Completed Buffy the Vampire Slayer cross stitch

I'm happy to report that the Buffy the Vampire Slayer cross stitch that I started in January has now been completed and given to its appreciative recipient. This is the second weelittlestitches pattern that I've completed and I love their style! Go Canadian pattern designers!

This project was my companion for many ferry trips and a few crafty get togethers with preschool moms. People usually didn't recognize the characters, but I knew that Janet would know who they were. Janet (pictured under a stack of stuffed animals and dinosaurs, provided by Sophia), is a Buffy nerd and plans to watch the entire series again starting this fall. I know my work will have a place of honour in her new home.

In case you're not as familiar with the Joss Whedon oeuvre, the characters from left to right are Spike, Willow, Angel, Buffy (complete with crucifix necklace and stake), Xander, and Giles.

And cause I'm always curious to see what the back of the work looks like, I'm throwing in this shot for you.

Lucky, lucky me!

I participated in the Vancouver MQG - Portland MQG pouch swap this summer and received the most beautiful rainbow pouch! It was made by Deb Henry and she obviously looked at my inspiration mosaic because she hit the nail on the head with the design. Rainbow + solids + linen = Happy Holly!

I wanted a larger pouch that I could use for hand stitching projects and I can't wait to load this up with a needlebook and some hexagons. Thanks, Deb!

The title of this blog post is a reference to a Charlie and Lola video. Five-year-old Sophia was really on a Charlie and Lola kick this summer.

Fun times in Seattle

Come with me on a pictorial tour of my weekend in Seattle! The Vancouver, Seattle, and Portland Modern Quilt Guilds got together for a meet up and I had the best time! I met new friends, connected with online friends in person, did some sewing, and shopped for fabric.

In Bellingham, we stopped by Fourth Corner Quilts.

 I was excited to see some samples of Shea Henderson's patterns hanging there.

On Saturday morning, I hopped in the van with Sonja, Karen, Krista, Felicity & Berene

and we headed to Island Quilter on Vashon Island. 

Island Quilter was having a quilt show with a mix of Portland MQG and Seattle MQG members' quilts.

The fabric selection was stunning and resembled a labyrinth. Throughout the day, people would take a break from sewing and go shopping. I've never had a fabric "tab" before, it was fun!

Chandra and Susan got to work at the cutting table prepping fabric for modern crosses quilts from Susan's book.

Katie got us started for the day and explained the game plan. 

She explained how we would be making some quilts using the stitch and flip triangles technique from her book.

The room was full of animated conversations between new friends. Season is from Seattle and Matthew is from Portland.

I loved this "Fresh Cut" quilt by Katie. Check out how the binding matches the block colours!

We were treated to a yummy lunch. The fruit salad and ice cold drinks were especially appreciated on such a hot day!

The was the baby quilt I sewed most of my blocks for. 

There was a constant flow between shopping, cutting, ironing, sewing, and instagramming during the day.

After the sewing day, we stopped by the West Seattle Fabric Company, an adorable shop full of great fabrics.

It was fun to see the cover quilt from Scrap Republic on display, especially since I had been cutting blocks and chatting with the author, Emily, earlier in the day!

More fabric shopping ensued.

I was greeted at the hotel room by a happy dimorphodon who had gone to the Pacific Science Centre while I was at the sewing day.

The next morning, while checking out from the hotel, I was greeted with a much less welcome sight: a flat tire. Sadly, I missed saying goodbye to lots of people while they packed into Drygoods Design. Happily, the tire shop was within walking distance of The Quilting Loft and I did get there before the shop hop was completely over.

I got to say goodbye to my friends Petra and Susan at The Quilting Loft.

And I was excited to see Cynthia's Kona Modern Quilts fabric on display for the first time!

Even Eleanor got into the fabric shopping.

I made it over to Drygoods Design around 2:45pm on Sunday.

I had the store to myself! It's a delightful little shop.

Me and Keli, the owner. She was lovely to meet and has added so many touches to make this space look beautiful. The fabric balloons made me smile as soon as I walked in the door.

We had a new tire by 5:00pm and got home to Vancouver by 10:00pm. It was an intense, wonderful, exhausting weekend and I look forward to doing it again! Thanks so much to the rest of the organizing crew (Susan, Heather, Petra, Season and Katie) and to the shops and sponsors for making this a great meet-up!

We just got back from the most amazing weekend in Seattle! I loved participating in the modern quilt guild meet up between the Seattle, Portland and Vancouver MQGs. I'm in the middle of processing my thoughts and photos, but thought I'd share my favourite intersection in Bellingham with you for starters. Have you ever found your name on a street sign?

A new modern quilt guild in BC!

I'm happy to report that the Nanaimo Modern Quilt Guild is having their first meeting this Wednesday, August 1st. It's great to see a new BC modern quilt guild get started and since I'm a Vancouver Island girl, I'm especially happy to see an Island guild start up!

WIP Wednesday

I'm happy to have a work in progress to report on this week! On July 14th, I had a great time at the Vancouver Modern Quilt Guild's first-ever workshop and I completed a quilt top!

Felicity taught us her Easy Going Modern quilt and it was indeed an easygoing afternoon. We chatted and laughed and sewed and pressed and ended up with some beautiful quilt tops!

Felicity also taught us a fun technique for keeping all our patches in the right place as we stitched them together. It made it very easy to piece the quilt top and there was no row marking involved.

As you can see, I chose to use solids to create an ombre effect. It turned out just like I had been hoping! I can't wait to share it at tomorrow's VMQG meeting.

My fabrics are cut and I'm looking forward to a day of sewing at Felicity's Easy Going Modern workshop! This is the first ever workshop organized by the Vancouver Modern Quilt Guild and I think it's great that our instructor is one of our own members teaching about a quilt that she designed. It took me a long time to decide on my fabrics, but I went with solids in the end. I precut my fabrics ahead of time like a good student and I think even my scraps turned out looking lovely. Can't wait to see how the quilt top looks after today's workshop!
